OK, I admit that I was and am rather socially inept. But this goes beyond that, and John is a saint for helping. It’s good that Nicholle recognizes that something is amiss in her life but my God does it go deeper than I thought.

John cares a lot about people. It can sometimes be detrimental but it takes a lot for him to give up on somebody. Especially if they seem somewhat receptive. This is certainly a deep-seated issue for her but thanks to John's approach, she's been slowly (ever so slowly) inching towards trying to get better. If anything to make her life a little easier.

It seems likely Nicholle is a high-functioning autistic, with no social skills. I have met many like her but they tend to be less verbal than Nicholle often using single word replies. Such people tend to be better characters in fiction than to live with IRL.

That's definitely in the realm of possibility but you are most certainly right there. It can be quite a hill to climb over for a lot of folk. Autistic or not, I wanted to be sure that I don't make light of people who go through anything remotely similar.

This girl hasn't grown out of the teenager assumption that the first thing that pops into her head is the deepest most profound truth. Hopefully this intervention will keep her from joining an internet cult and/or becoming a right-winger. She was on the verge of becoming a swerf, so good work on her room-mate talking her out of that at least.
