Oh look! D&D! It's important to note that stealing from an npc isn't always a good idea. Especially if they're a king or someone of equal importance. Sure you may have a high rank in 'Sleight of Hand' but sometimes the DM may decide to shut you down for being a little too cheeky. Like sending a platoon of guards after you if you fail a stealth check while trying to escape the king's treasure room
